TV News: Reality Check for The L Word

Creator of Showtime’s series The L Word, Ilene Chaiken, has been keeping herself busy after the final episodes of the iconic lesbian series finished up. A new reality show following the lives of six lesbian women is set to premiere on June 20th titled aptly The Real L Word.

The rumors have also been milling around about The L Word being made into a movie and these rumors have been identified as the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Ilene Chaiken has written on her twitter page, “Still working on The L Word movie, and ramping up on The Real L Word. They're two completely separate projects.”

Many people were left with an empty void after The L Word finished up its sixth and final season. Like most shows that have ended on a high (Sex & The City, Charlie’s Angels), there is a film in the making to give all the L Word addicts another hit, but who knows how a lesbian genre film will go down in mainstream box office?

The Real L Word reality series set to air in June will be an interesting show to catch. Never before have we been offered the chance to look into the lives of lesbian women. Even though they will not represent all gay women in the community, it’s a great opportunity to step into their world and view what most people only gossip about. It’s sure to get the tongues wagging and hopefully Showtime will have yet another hit on their hands.

For television companies, reality TV show costs run far below that of a scripted series, so these types of shows are favored within the industry right now. With hit reality TV shows like The Hills and Jersey Shore proving to be popular with viewers, these cheap TV shows are win for everyone.

What can we expect from The Real L Word? Six women take the reigns and lead us into their lesbian lifestyle. Tracy is a film & TV development executive. She is gorgeous and has only recently come out to her Mum who is struggling to come to terms with her daughter’s sexuality. Nikki and Jill are the shows resident couple. They work their lives around arranging for their future wedding. Whitney has a reckless style about her that makes her a great friend, but a bad choice for a partner. Mikey has the tattoo covered arms and makes her way around the streets on her custom-built motorbike. Need more be said? Lastly there is Rose, a sexy Latina real estate adviser around whom Papi’s character from The L Word was loosely based. She struggles to hold down a relationship, but it’s something she longs for.

With a new film of The L Word being made and the reality series The Real L Word about to be released, all those who were hungry for a follow up of the completed series should be breathing a sigh of relief. With Ilene Chaiken’s magic touch, these both have the potential to pull a huge following. Let’s hope we get some quality viewing in the cinema and on Showtime.
